The tests told you what's wrong. This is the part where you roll your sleeves up and fix it. It's the hardest work in the garden and the most worthwhile.

The dig
This is the centre of the whole job. Dig down 10–20cm and loosen everything. You're resetting the soil — opening it back up so air, water and roots can move through it again.
Then add what the tests told you it needs, spread over the turned soil:

Then turn it all through the top 10cm again, so the gypsum, compost and organics are spread through that upper layer rather than sitting on it.
Fine vs coarse forest litter: different yards use different names. It's all green waste, blended and part-composted. Coarse has the big chunks left in; fine has them screened out. You want fine here, turned into the soil. You want coarse later, as mulch on top — the chunks are what let water through. Swapping them wastes both.
pH — goes down before you start
Garden lime to raise it, sulphur acidifier to lower it. Both from the hardware store, both with instructions on the pack — follow them conservatively, because overshooting is a nightmare to walk back. You won't see results for about six weeks. Retest then, and apply again if you still need to.
Put the lime or sulphur down on the morning you're going to dig, before you turn a single spadeful. Then all that digging works it through the soil for you — and you never have to incorporate it as a separate job.
Compost — why it matters
Compost brings living microbes, and living microbes hold nutrients in the root zone. When microbes die, the nutrients they were holding turn water-soluble and wash down past where roots can reach. Living soil keeps the nutrition where the plants are. It also builds structure, increases resilience and disease resistance, and makes everything grow faster.
Lantasia is the recommended supplier — excellent product, full of beneficial microbes. Majura Valley farmgate compost is an alternative in 20L buckets, though supply is less reliable; fine for a small courtyard.
Bags vs bulk — the 44m² line. Under 44m², bags are fine. Over it, drive out to Lantasia (just past Bungendore, on the way to Braidwood) and have them load a ute or trailer. For 100m²: $287 in bulk, plus maybe $150 for ute hire and fuel — call it $450. The same job in bags is $1,250.
Hydrophobicity — wetting agent
Only if your soil failed the water test. Apply it after the decompaction and organics step.
A wetting agent works like detergent: it lowers water's surface tension so it can get in under the waxy film and re-wet the particles. Think of washing an oily pan — the detergent gets beneath the oil and lets water carry it off. Same principle.
Expect to apply it more than once; check monthly until it's resolved. In my own garden, a single application turned bone-dry repellent soil into soil that took water — within about three months the difference was obvious.
- Richgro Two Easy Wet hose-on soil soaker — clips onto the hose, dilutes as it sprays.
- Eco-Hydrate — the preferred product, but you need a spray pack separately.
- The trick: Seasol comes packaged in a spray pack. Decant the Seasol into another container — you'll want it for soaking plants at planting anyway — and fill the empty spray pack with wetting agent.
Mulch
Coarse forest litter, about 8cm thick. Coarse rather than fine because water needs to get through it.
It breaks down fast, which means you re-mulch regularly — but that's the point. Breaking down is what feeds the soil and the microbiology, and what builds structure. And it stops evaporation, which is the other half of the job.
This isn't forever. The goal is 100% living plant coverage on the ground. Once the plants have closed over, they do the mulch's job themselves — they suppress the weeds and they feed the soil. That's a large part of why I plant at nine per square metre: dense planting gets you to full coverage faster, and full coverage is what ends the mulching. It's an upfront investment, not an ongoing obligation.
Never let mulch touch the stem. Peel it back into a collar around the base of every plant. Mulch against a stem holds moisture there, and the fungus in it — that white mycelium threading through older mulch — will start to rot the plant and invite fungal disease.
Order of operations

What you've just set in motion
Decompaction restarts the structure. Gypsum binds particles into crumbs with pathways between them. And the organic matter — the compost especially — has introduced microbes: you've raised the biodiversity of your soil at a microscopic level.
That's the part that compounds. Those microbes propagate. They spread through the soil you've just opened up, and they keep building it long after you've put the spade away. You've jump-started the system. Nature does the rest — deeper, richer, more diverse, more resilient, year on year.
Now stay off it. After planting, stop digging except to weed, and avoid walking on the soil. Use the same routes every time, or lay flat rocks or pavers as stepping points. The soil is open and airy right now — and that means it recompacts easily. Give the roots a couple of years to reinforce the structure and it'll take traffic again.
