Ponds can bring a new dimension to your balcony or rooftop garden, adding a calming water feature that supports wildlife and enhances the aesthetic of the space. Beyond their beauty, ponds help regulate the temperature of your garden and create a peaceful atmosphere with the option to add the soothing sound of running water.

This Paris garden with a pond was designed by Camille Mullers. It provides evaporative cooling in summer, thermal mass making the balcony temperature more stable in winter & the sound of running water. If it were my pond, I would have installed wetland plants to filter the water making it cleaner.

Why Ponds Are Ideal for Rooftops and Balconies:

Benefits:

• Ponds create a source of water for insects and birds, promoting local biodiversity.
• They add thermal mass, helping to regulate the temperature on your balcony by absorbing heat during the day and releasing it at night.
• Ponds can support fish, such as goldfish, and contribute to the overall tranquility of the space.
• They can be easily adapted to include a pump for water circulation, adding the pleasant sound of running water to your garden.

Water Weight and Load Considerations:

• Water is relatively light compared to saturated growing media, so as long as you follow the loading values for your balcony, ponds can be safely incorporated into your design.
• For example, on a balcony with a load-bearing capacity of 250kg/m², you could comfortably have a pond with about 20-22cm of water depth, which is enough to keep goldfish alive as long as they have some shade and shelter. Ensure the total pond volume is over 100 liters to provide a stable environment for the fish.

Choosing the Right Size and Shape:

• When designing a pond for a rooftop or balcony, it's essential to choose a size that fits both the aesthetic and the load-bearing limitations of your space.
• The depth of the pond will directly correlate with the weight per square meter.

Creating a Balanced Ecosystem:

• Ponds can support plants, fish, birds and insects. Include aquatic plants that act as biological filters to maintain water quality naturally.
• The inclusion of fish & a pump will help to reduce mosquito problems.

2. Construction Solutions:

Waterproofing and Installation:

• Ensure the pond is watertight by using high-quality pond liners or pre-formed containers. For balconies, raised steel or fiberglass ponds are excellent options as they are lightweight and durable.
• If your balcony has floating tiles, you can remove a tile and place the pond in its spot to help with drainage and reduce overall weight.

Adding Water Circulation:

• Ponds can be equipped with a pump to circulate water, which not only adds the soothing sound of running water but also helps keep the water oxygenated, creating a healthier environment for fish and plants. Be mindful that many solar pumps are not of particularly high quality, instead I recommend you opt for a wired pump that can be plugged in to a powerpoint.

3. Supporting Wildlife:

• Adding a pond to your balcony can create a small ecosystem that supports local wildlife, including birds, insects, and aquatic animals.
• Goldfish are an excellent option for small ponds, and adding shelter from the sun (such as floating plants) will help them thrive.
